Funny how an idea takes its time to germinate.  Last spring i wandered around my neighbourhood taking photos of things...with only a vague idea about painting.  Only lately has painting them make sense and now i wish i had more!..(next spring).  I only wish i could paint as fast as a photograph!.  I have such a backlog my laptop is full.

Have begun a larger series of Neighbourhoods as they are emerging from the mini paintings as a bit of a series, besides i love the play of architectural forms in the doors and windows against the natural tree shape.  Plus its amazing the front doors that match the trees!

Here is a first for me! At least its been a very long time since i have painted anything remotely architectural or man-made. Though i think in this piece, its really just a counterpoint for the wonderful colour explosion in the tree

I have been working on larger paintings the last few days so am a bit behind on the mini paintings.  It was good to paint with freer bigger strokes, I notice its easy to get too fussy with the small paintings. So I posted a sign on my wall with two painters whose looser painterly strokes I admire. KEEP IT LOOSE!

Coastal

This is my first "larger" oil painting since beginning with oil.   I have begun a new process of doing a mini painting first and then redoing in large format, as the slow drying time of oil requires a different approach than acrylic for me anyway.  Though of course going small to large is never that simple..one cannot just copy there own work., each piece requires a completely fresh approach.  ahh..the challenges of painting. 
Also if any oil painters out there could recommend a good air purifyer that would be great.  I paint next to a wide open window and fan.  But it is cold and still damp out still and kind of unpleasant.

View from an Island

This is a small slice of a view from Helliwell to a tiny bit of Denman and to the bigger Vancouver Island.  I used to compose paintings with either a focus on the sky or on the foreground, now the ocean (middleground) is taking up much of the space.  Not sure why, though i think i like the feeling of a big body of water and the land is an interruption of some kind.

Hmm getting more intense with the colour..i notice.  Entranced still with the variation of the colours of sky and sea and sand.  All about the moods i suppose..moving from one to another.

I am pretty fascinated with patterns of the tide.  When i was a kid,  our summer days were spent "out on the tide" as we called it building boats, castles out of sand and sitting in our creations just as the tide swirled around, collapsing our sand masterpieces.

This piece is quite abstract..focusing on colour but also on the simple shapes of sand and tide pools..I eliminated detail to enhance the serene feeling one experiences sometimes at the beach.

This painting was done from a photo taken a few weeks ago, when the weather was sunny and cold, in complete contrast from today!.  The relections of the winter foliage in the calm water and cool light was really beautiful.  Loved the muted, understated colour.
